“What the hell was that all about?” Sarah snipped.
“Who know, but I can tell you, being a man is not my idea of a vacation from my life!” Susan replied curtly “I was picturing something low pressure with no real demands.” She added.
“You can stop your moaning” Linda snapped, “I’m just as surprised as you were. I just wanted a break from being an overlooked, overworked mother, but here we are. I suggest we do as the gentleman said and take a look around the house and see what we can find. We need to figure out what roles we have now” she added.
“Fill your boots Linda dear” Susan sneered, “I’m not playing their little game. I’m just going to sit and wait here until this obvious mistake is picked up and resolved”
“Yeah, me too!” Sarah nodded, and both mother and daughter sat back into the couch, mirroring each other with stern expressions and folded arms. Linda sighed and rolled her eyes.
“Suit yourselves” she said, “come on you three let’s see what this house is like” she continued, gesturing for Jon, Mikey and Karyn to follow her. The four of them left the living room and began to look around the ground floor. As they walked out the living room, there was a door to left that led into a large modern kitchen complete with a kitchen island and a circular oak table. There was a door set in one wall that clearly led to the garage, and one that led into the back garden, and a third that opened up into a decent sized utility room with a separate washer and dryer.
“Mom, can I go look upstairs?” Mikey asked, pointing to the large staircase with an ornate wooden bannister that ran up the side of the hallway.
“Of course Mikey, you go on ahead, we’ll be up in a minute ok?” Linda replied with a smile.
“I’ll come with you” Karyn smiled, “you coming Jon?” She asked.
“After I check out that garden” Jon said staring out the large bay windows, “it looks huge!”
“Ooh, good idea!” Linda said excitedly, “I’ll come with” she added as the four of them split up with Karyn and Mikey heading upstairs, and Jon and Linda making their way into the back yard.
“Can you believe the nerve of them!” Susan muttered flapping a hand at the now blank tv screen, “you’d think they’d be a bit more thorough with the amount of paperwork we had to fill in for this vacation”
“I know, and I can’t believe I’m stuck in a house with Jon and Karyn!” Sarah whined in response, “I wanted to be with Biff mom, you said you put that in my special requests.”
“I did Sarah, you saw me” Susan replied, “I’ll sit here as long as it takes to get things sorted out” she added, a tone of finality in her voice. The two of them sat there scowling in silence for a few moments, seemingly taking it in turns to breath heavily through their noses. Eventually Susan started to squirm a little, and crossed her legs. Another minute or two passed and eventually she let out an exasperated sigh.
“Wait here Sarah” she said as she got to her feet “I need to go find the bathroom” she added.
“Oh you better believe I’m not going anywhere!” Sarah said, emphasising her mood by drawing in a big breath through her nose, then blowing it back out sharply. Susan nodded in approval then made her way into the hall. There was no sign of the other four, but she thought she could see movement through the kitchen window. With a shrug she turned around and headed back to the front door. There was no evidence of a bathroom downstairs, so she reluctantly made her way up the staircase. At the top she found it split into two, with a small set leading off to a mini landing to the right. This section was clearly leading to room above the attached garage, and sure enough there was a door with a square wooden sign painted in pastel pink and white with the name ‘Michelle’.
Susan took the other section of stairway leading to the left, and came out onto a large spacious landing which stretched the length of the house. There was a corner that led to the right as she reached the top, and on the wall directly in front of her was a door with another wooden sign, this one was black with name ‘Keiron’ painted on in lime green digital style script. At the far end of the hallway to the left was another door with a sign that said ‘Mom & Dad’ with the word Mom was written in a flowing cursive style and the word Dad looked like it had been painted with a military style template. She could see another door between the Mom & Dad door and the Keiron door and she took a step forward. By chance she looked to right and around the small corner at the top of the stairs. There was the rest of the landing with a large window looking down over the back garden, but her eye was drawn to wall on the right again. There was a final door with another wooden sign hanging on it. This one was a bright sky blue with the name ‘Simon’ in bubble lettering, each letter was painted in a different bright colour. Susan narrowed her eyes at the sigh as if it had offended her.
“Ok assholes” she muttered through a sarcastic half smile, “let’s see who you think I should be” she added as she reached for the door.
