"So you and Jon are okay now?" Monica peered into her friend's eyes, looking for any sign of doubt or distress. "Yesterday you didn't want to be anywhere near him."
This was the second time someone had assumed that Karyn had had some kind of fight with Jon, but this time she didn't have the luxury of a front door to walk through and escape the conversation with. "We talked it out this morning, and it was just a misunderstanding," Karyn improvised. "It's fine now."
"Are you sure?" Monica pushed.
"I'm sure. It's fine."
"Okay, but maybe you should still sit with--"
"Hey," Karyn interrupted, distracted by something behind Monica, "is there something different about Sarah today?"
Monica turned to where Karyn was looking and saw Sarah McMillan, hanging on the arm of Biff Meadows. "I think her hair looked different when she got to school. I've never seen her wear it like that. But it's whatever, just Sarah being Sarah, right?"
The realization struck Karyn like a slap. Her hair! How had she not realized it? She'd been looking directly at Sarah not twenty minutes earlier as she and Jon had arrived at school, and now she was clearly wearing a different hairstyle. But it took Monica pointing it out for Karyn to notice the difference. All she knew was that Sarah somehow looked-- somehow looked hotter than she had before. Karyn should be able to pick out the difference between two hairstyles on her own, shouldn't she?
"Yeah," Karyn agreed half-heartedly, but her eyes kept themselves locked on the cheerleader. "Just Sarah being Sarah."
