"Just start from the beginning Jon. I'm not sure how I can help you, but I'll try." Karyn assured the young man. Seeing him at this state of self loathing made her fear what he could do to himself, or worse to Tiffany.
Jon slumped his shoulders, wondering who had been selected by his wish. It obviously hadn't been Karyn.
"Jon!"
Karyn and Jon were each startled by Stephanie shouting her son's name. Before they had time to process anything she had appeared at Jon's bedroom door.
"Stephanie, what's going on?" Karyn was the one to ask. The furious look on Stephanie's face was enough to make her terrified.
"My apologies Karyn, but would you be willing to speak with my son another night? I just received some news he and I need to talk about." Stephanie seemed to be trying to restrain herself and failing.
Karyn looked from the mother to her son. Jon looked frightened, but she could tell he seemed to know why his mother was so angry.
"I think we can hold off on talking." Jon looked into Karyn's eyes after an involuntary gulp. "Would it be okay to try talking with you at school tomorrow if we can?"
Karyn was worried, but upon seeing Tiffany behind Stephanie shaking like a leaf she took stock of her priorities.
"Fine, we'll pick this up later." With that Karyn walked past Stephanie and grabbed Tiffany's hand. "Let's get going."
"But mom, I think-" Tiffany tried to remain in place, but Karyn wouldn't have it.
"I don't know what this is about, but it's between them. I'm sure Jon will explain himself later."
"A-Alright. I'll wait for you at school tomorrow." Tiffany told Jon sadly as she and her mom left.
Stephanie closed the door once they were gone.
"You know what this is about, right?" Stephanie crossed her arms, foot tapping as she stared down her son.
"You're the one my wish made aware, right?" Jon nervously answered her question with one of his own.
"You're damn right I am."
