Normally, Jon doodled in his notebook instead of taking actual notes. But if you'd looked at most pages, you'd see sketches of people's faces, or reasonably complex scenes, or maybe a large banyan tree.

On this day, in every class after first period, Jon drew a house. A simple square-on-the-bottom, triangle-roof house, like you'd see a small child draw. He drew the square, and he drew the roof, and one door and two windows, and then he traced over the square and the triangle and the door and the windows, over and over again, on the same page, with the same pen, until class ended.

And between classes, Jon would run into Sarah, and she'd look different as the day went on. Nothing that Jon could quite put his finger on. Just more... more. Like there was more to her each time Jon saw her. And each time Jon saw her, Karyn was practically hanging off of Sarah. Jon felt like that should bother him, but for some reason it didn't. For some reason, he couldn't muster up any feeling at all about seeing his fest friend making goo-goo eyes at Sarah McMillan. For some reason, Karyn was suddenly... uninteresting to Jon.

Sarah, meanwhile, was reveling in her new life and new perspective. She was as self-confident as Biff had ever been, and as much of a horn-dog as Steve had ever been, and her entire focus, her entire attention, all of that combined masculine energy was locked straight onto Karyn. The girl was putty in Sarah's fingers.

In second period Sarah had cornered Nelson Oswald, a kid who always seemed to have his nose in a Harry Turtledove novel, and left with both Nelson's copy of "Return Engagement" and a knowledge of military strategy.

In third period Sarah had snuck up on class president Fulton Onasis, who apparently valued his ability to speak with adults on their level.

At lunch, Sarah had charmed Karyn into sneaking out with her behind the bleachers. Sarah didn't mind skipping lunch, but she made sure that Karyn had a nice, big sausage to fill her mouth with.

And with a mind for strategy, and the ability to speak to teachers as equals, and a post-coital clarity, Sarah knew what her next step was going to be.
