She smiled. "It doesn't have to be....that's up to you. But...I hope you want to do it again if it is."
Jon paused. Was she suggesting what he thought she was suggesting?
She leaned over and kissed him, and for a moment he forgot the question. A beautiful, fun girl was interested in him. Finally, she pulled away. "Good night, Jon." she said.
He wandered back toward the gate and started walking home, still dazed.
When he entered the house, his new sister was at the dining room table with her textbooks. He still didn't know who she had been before today. The name Lorraine didn't ring a bell. Sarah was hovering over her. She had a pair of glasses on and was trying to help her with whatever the assignment was. She looked...maternal. It was something he didn't expect to see from Sarah. Was this kinder side of her new, or did the original Sarah have it as well?
"How was your date?" she said. "Did you have a nice time?"
"Yeah...then I walked her home, and came back."
"Are you going to see her again?"
"I...think so," he said. At the least, he'd see her a lot after this was over.
"That's wonderful. I mean...you are such a nice boy..." Sarah said.
"I'm going to go...do my homework," he said. He needed time to think about this whole thing.
As soon as he got upstairs, he pulled out his phone. He hadn't looked at it in hours. There were messages from Rachel...apparently his friend at the moment, asking how his date was, and to call her. He scrolled through the gallery on his phone. There was a picture of him and a girl goofing around. She had red hair, and seemed rather athletic. She even reminded him a bit of Karyn before this. That had to be Rachel. Next photo was the same girl, in a cheerleading outfit, along with a few other cheerleaders, including Linda. Picture of Sarah as his mother...He also skimmed through their recent texts then texted her that he'd talk to her tomorrow.
His phone chirped again. A text from Linda McMillan. He opened it. "Had a great time."
Jon leaned back on the bed. This wasn't quite what he'd expected.
