Bethany Black stood at reception. It was nearly 4AM. Usually, the night shift was taken by one of the junior staff, but in an emergency, everyone had to pitch in. It was quiet, however, and she was able to get some work done while she manned the desk.
Suddenly, the clock hit 4AM and Bethany began to yawn, her eyes fluttering, before her head gently lowered, and she began to snore in her chair. It was shortly thereafter the workmen entered. A set went to the room she'd been given and packed up her things, while another carried her out of the chair and to the van waiting outside. bed in the room was made and it was left as if no one had stayed there at all.
Like clockwork, they delivered another individual, dressed in a white blouse and black slacks. One of the workmen affixed a nametag to the blouse and sat her down in the chair. However, this wasn't a middle aged woman, but a much younger individual. They took Bethany's purse from under the counter, replacing it with a bookbag. Finally, they placed a banged up iPhone on the desk next to the newcomer. It had taken them only a few minutes, but it was time to move on.
Elsewhere, another set of workmen entered Lake Point hospital, walking to the off duty rest room used by the staff to sleep during long shifts. It was unoccupied. They began pulling the sheets off of one of the beds before another of their number brought in a sleeping individual dressed in a pair of scrubs and placed them on the bed, and pulled a blanket over their chest. Opening a nearby locker, they hung clothes and placed several other items before filing out of the room, stopping only at the whiteboard that tracked on call staff to add an additional name to it.
In another home, the workmen began clearing out a home office, first taking out the desk, the chair, and all of the files. They then began redressing it as a bedroom. A smaller desk, a dresser, and a bed. They unwrapped clothes and hung them in the closet, and filled the drawers neatly. They placed pictures on the wall. Finally, they brought in a sleeping occupant, placing them in the bed before leaving the room, and going downstairs to work on removing and replacing items there.
When the occupants of the house awoke, they wouldn't notice that there was an extra one of them...because...they'd always been there, hadn't they?
