It was then that they heard the doorbell ring, coming from upstairs.
"Who is that? Maybe we only just got a package?" Jon mumbled as he ascended the stairs. He opened the door and there was Biff, back from her tiring adventure.
"Well, it's good to see you're doing well. We missed you in school tod..." Jon said, and then was silenced before finishing the sentence. His eyes went wide in shock. Because Biff had stood up on her hind legs, wrapped her paws around him, and kissed him.
"Jon, the sex machine," Karyn said, having followed Jon up the stairs and settled into a perfect viewing position for the spectacle just in time.
Several things happened in fast succession then. They stood back from each other, both mortified that Karyn had seen this. Biff also felt very, very strange, and was surprised by her ease of balance on two legs. And then Biff looked down at himself, in astonishment.
"I'm back to normal!" Biff said. He grabbed Jon's shoulders and almost kissed him again, and then stood back, looking even more aghast. "You know, I'm starting to care, a whole lot less, about what other people think about my image, but, could I count on you, both of you, to not tell anyone about this, ever so long as you live?"
"I was just about to ask you the same thing, I sure as hell wouldn't get anything out of anyone knowing," Jon admitted.
"My lips are sealed," Karyn said.
Biff's life, he could have it all back. He laughed and jumped in triumph. He had changed back very, very fast, much faster than the mist changed anyone. What was the explanation?
"Come inside, quick," Jon said to the now naked from the waist down human male Biff, who was standing out in the middle of the residential neighborhood. As a sphinx, she had settled on wearing a loose shirt, just because it hid her breasts, and also had a zipper pocket in it to put her phone, not that it was exactly easy to answer it, nor to unzip the zipper.
"Oh, right," he said, even more embarrassed.
"Fortunately I have something right here you can use," Jon said, having rushed to the laundry room about 20 feet away, and handing Biff some elastic sweatpants from the top of a pile of laundry. He got him some sandals too. They seemed a bit small but they would do. Biff wasted no time and quickly put on the meager clothing.
"Biff. Go after Sarah. Your girl is waiting for you," Jon suggested.
If Biff had looked happy before, the realization put a look on his face of almost nirvana. Then he ran out the front door.
"I hope we can all be friends, if that's not so weird!" he yelled back as he was running.
"I think he really grew as a person, from that whole experience," Karyn suggested.
"I was thinking that too. Unpleasant experiences build character, or something like that. At least that's what Calvin's dad was always saying, in Calvin and Hobbes," Jon said back.
"Aren't you a little disappointed though?" Karyn asked.
"What, because I made a friend, or because he's happy because it turns out I didn't ruin his life after all? What's there to be disappointed by?" Jon answered.
"Hoh," Karyn said, sounding almost like a meow.
"Besides, the whole thing, it really made me realize, there's another girl, I've liked for a long time."
An awkward pause persisted for several seconds, as if Karyn was waiting for a punchline.
"What, me?" Karyn asked in moderate disbelief.
"Of course you," Jon said.
A few seconds passed, before Karyn said, "as long as you don't expect me to kiss you, because I'm happy with my ears and tail as they are, and if I lost them at this point, to me, it would be about like losing an arm."
The idea hit Jon unexpectedly as Karyn delivered it. He backed his head up for a moment, considering if that really was it. Could that really have been because of him kissing Biff? It seemed like there wasn't any other possible catalyst, if there was one at all, but Jon was thinking Biff had simply changed back at that moment and it was a coincidence that Jon was kissing him, or her, at the time. But if it was true, that would also require Jon have some strange secret power, and how could that be? He wasn't even changed.
"Sometimes people change from the mist, but don't obviously physically change, or change only very slightly. Is it possible, that you were changed, and you didn't even know it? Possibly the whole time, you've been changed, from my perspective, possibly for years, and this is just your power," suggested Karyn.
"What's all the fuss about?" Mikey asked, arriving at the front door of the house, after hearing all that commotion.
"There's the perfect chance to test it. Mikey may have come to accept it, but I'm pretty sure she'd change back if she could," Karyn said.
“Darn right I’d change back if I could,” Mikey said in confirmation.
"Mikey, I'd like you to close your eyes for a moment," Jon said.
"Why?"
"Just, close your eyes and stand there for a moment, please. Trust me."
Mikey did as asked, as Jon moved in to kiss his sister, perhaps soon to be brother.
"Sarah! Sarah!" Biff yelled excitedly, spam pressing her doorbell. With HIS index finger. That was so much better than before. He, or she at the time, had mashed her paw on the doorbell button to Jon's house a few minutes earlier, but this was so much more refined, and precise.
Sarah's mom opened the door, and blinked without saying a word in surprise at what she was seeing, and just was unable to do anything for several seconds. "Biff?" She then gasped. "Sarah, honey, come over here, look who it is!"
Sarah's mouth was wide open, seeing Biff like this. Her tail was wagging furiously.
"I'm back!" Biff said, on the verge of tears.
"But, how? What happened?!" Sarah asked.
"Never mind that. Just kiss me!" he said.
With a shrug of her shoulders, she embraced her once again boyfriend and kissed him. And then things got awkward.
As they kissed, Biff's arms and body bulked up and grew fur, as his balance grew more precarious. They backed away from each other slowly, Biff staying balanced on her back legs, but physically in the form of a large winged female cat once again.
"What the hell!" she yelled, to any deity that might have been listening. "What the hell was that!" she screamed, looking up into the sky, and then looking down at her two forepaws, and starting to cry.
"Oh what the hell indeed," Sarah said, and then embraced Biff and kissed her. They were the same lips she had just kissed a moment ago after all. Even if Sarah was heterosexual, and whatever their relationship status, she could certainly stand to do that much, to do otherwise would seem pretty damn petty at this point. Besides, better to kiss the guy-turned-girl she knew so well, who conducted himself with honor and decency, than associate with all the assholes she had been dealing with so much lately. That James namely, sure turned out to not be who Sarah thought he was. At least Biff was a good person. Besides, it was looking like it may actually be possible for Biff to return as before after all. She just had to be patient. They held the kiss for several seconds, as Sarah's tail wagged wildly, and Biff's raised high up into the air. They both decided it was a pretty good kiss at least.
