Since he was our medical officer, I said "Your name is now Maxi. Is that alright?" He did not seem to care one way or the other what he was called in the clan as long as he was a member. He was balancing my pen on his lips as he was going over the instructions again. I told him to use the pods. "If my hands are not good enough, that one eye business isn't either. Fix it." I ordered. He nodded and went over to the pods. He put in the settings before going in. When he came out, I saw he had no more scars. His stomach was toned and flat. "I will be waiting in the clan building. You can tell me the results when you have finished all of them." I said. Doctor nodded as he looked over at Alpha and began to give him his final preparations for the installation surgery. It was going to be awhile. I wanted to be close by, so I chose the rock garden on the same level. I asked all of the AEP units that I wanted to wait around so they could help me with this. There were 6 PEA units for 6 AEP units. This was going to work great. We were together in the garden. At the end of the day, Maxi found us.
Maxi
He had changed his clothes. He did not look too well. He made to stand 6 feet from us. As he stood there, not speaking or moving, an awful tension began to build. I felt a sense of dread just creeping over me until I could no longer stand it. "What the hell is it, Maxi!?" I snapped at him. He held up the folder with instructions. "I am here to report the results of the surgeries." he said nervously. I nodded at Maxi to continue. "Here are the results: Alpha, critical success; Beta, critical success; Gamma, critical success; Delta, failure; Epsilon, critical success; Zeta, failure." That just pissed me off. "What the fuck are you sulking around for!? Just redo it and get it right this time! I almost had a heart attack!" He just nervously looked at us. I was very upset. "How the hell were there failures, Maxi!? You assured me your hands didn't have tremors holding a knife." That was not all. I walked to him and jabbed my finger in his chest. "And a fucking failure!? What the fuck is that!? You're supposed to be a cyborg. How did a great PEA unit like you mess this up!?" Maxi just winced at all of the berating.
Maxi said "Cutting was not a problem. I had trouble applying the upgrade properly. After 3 attempts, I moved on." We had to go to where the failure was. I made sure I looked at them. Maxi had the dignity to look embarrassed as I did. Delta was laying there. I could see nothing that was obviously wrong with him. However, the issue was deep beneath the skin. I then had our medical officer take me to the other failure. We did it over again for them. It was not that bad. This time, we read all of the precise instructions out loud before we did anything. There were no margins for error, so I took the 2 and he had the support role. I was very miffed and looking over his shoulder every step of the way. Maxi did not look like he was enjoying it. I did not care a single bit about that. This time, we got a success and a second failure for Zeta. That took care of Delta. I sighed and took a break. I got a success with Zeta my next go around. It took some serious skill. Now that we had finally finished, it was time to start it. I looked over at Maxi for a moment. It was a very withering stare. I said "Wake all of them up."
Our new medical officer nodded his head. "We will be waiting for you in the dojo." I told him. We were soon joined by the others on the mats of the dojo. He went off to do as I told him. I looked over at them. They all seemed to be peacefully waiting for this. I gathered the AEP units together. Splitting them up into pairs was very easy. Alpha through Zeta were paired with Connie, Peyton, Tracie, Barbara, Ashley and Sterling respectively. Robin had come to see it as a spectator. Christopher and Aubrey were nowhere near here. Because of the installation bonus, they each had a higher percentage chance of getting the memory chip. When I was doing all of the research and data mining, I figured it out. Every completed mission after the 15th rose the odds by 2%, starting from 5%. The 50% operation boost for critical successes also applied here. Every new mission would raise their chances by 3%. After the 29 missions they were on, they were at 49.5% chance at the chip their first time. The others were at a simple 33% chance. From all my notes, the nanites changed color as the unit progressed.
