"Cancer," Jon said. "He tried to hide it, until he couldn't anymore. He wanted to see his kids happy for as long as he could."
Georgia was about to respond when a young woman in a clipboard showed up. "Georgia, they need you in wardrobe."
"Thank you," she said. "Jonathan...I will see you later." She hurried off.
Jon wandered around alone till he found his dressing room, and tried to practice his lines again. He stayed there until the same woman came to get him. Then, a short while later, he found himself on set for the first time. Following everyone's lead, he was able to focus on what he was doing, and thought he was doing quite well until Karyn showed up.
Or rather...the actress playing Karyn. The director looked at her. "You're late," he said.
"Had a meeting...then had to change." 'Karyn' replied. She had a hint of a Southern accent. "Doesn't look like you were waiting long."
The director shook his head. "Fine. Shannon...we'll be ready for you in a minute."
Shannon moved and took the chair near Jon.
"Morning," Jon said, unsure how to take this person. He'd taken to Georgia and Lauren pretty quickly. And Natalie was disturbingly like his actual mom.
Shannon turned and looked at him. "You look nervous," she said. "I hope you don't look that way during the scene."
"I'm fine," he said, feeling a bit self-conscious. "It's just..."
"I heard...first time. Don't screw it up," she said.
Like that helped. Unlike Karyn, Shannon seemed more concerned with how him messing up would affect her. She also seemed utterly disinterested in him otherwise, and from the looks of it, utterly disdainful.
All that changed when the director called action. In the scene, she became Karyn. Mannerisms, dialogue, body language. She really was a good actress. He found himself more comfortable. Until the scene was over, and Shannon was back.
