Karyn was sitting there. "You ready to go?"
"Umm...go?" Jon said. He hadn't had anything planned for tonight.
"To the mall. Come on, you're going to make us late."
Jon started toward the door. Karyn looked at her. "You forgot your purse." Jon hurried upstairs and got it. He wasn't used to carrying one around. He had to live with this reality, although he could always amend his wish. It had been vague enough to work with.
Usually Jon did the driving, but this time, Karyn had her parents' car waiting in his driveway. Hopefully, in this reality, she was a better driver than he remembered.
In the car, he had a chance to look through his purse. He found a student ID with the name Janelle Madison inside, although the birthday on it was the one he remembered for Janelle. So he still had the same last name, at least. He rifled through the rest of the items. Tissues, makeup, wallet, breath mints...
The car suddenly stopped, and Karyn was looking at him. "We're here," she explained. "What's so fascinating all the sudden about your purse?"
Karyn didn't carry a purse. It wasn't her style.
"Nothing. I'm...umm...I forgot the purse the first time, I thought I might have forgotten something else."
Karyn seemed to accept that, and Jon relaxed as they entered the mall and he followed Karyn toward the food court.
