She didn't really have time to think about it, as the bedroom door opened and someone walked in. It was Karyn. She looked at the bed, saw Sarah hugging Jon, and fumed "What are you doing with her?"

"C'mon, Karyn," Jon tried to calm her down. "Sarah's cool."

Sarah whispered into Jon's ear, "I don't understand why you hang out with a troll like Karyn."

Karyn was about to say something else, but she paused before the words came out. An odd look came over her face, and her hair started to become somehow stringier. Her brow furrowed, and then it stuck that way. Her face stretched downwards, and her nose hooked to the left. Her jaw moved forward, and she developed an under-bite. Her back hunched over, her arms thinned out to almost sticks, her knees bent themselves, and suddenly, Karyn looked remarkably like a troll. Instead of speaking, she just grunted, and stood there in the middle of Jon's room.

Jon recoiled in horror and slipped out of Sarah's arms. Was that really Karyn? This wasn't the person he thought of as his best friend. It couldn't be!

"What happened to Karyn?" Jon asked, frantic "she's my best friend!"

Sarah was a bit unnerved herself. She didn't quite understand that she was asleep. "That's what Karyn is," Sarah said, more speaking out of nervousness than actually thinking about what she said, "I don't understand why you think of her as a friend. If Karyn was a bit different, then I'd understand, I guess."

Jon crawled farther up his bed, farther away from the beast standing in his room, and said "Different how? Geez, I don't want this monster for a friend!"

Sarah thought about it, and suddenly a second copy of Karyn appeared next to the troll. This one was normal but it was just standing straight, staring deadpan. Sarah still didn't know what was gong on, but she got the hint.

She looked at the new Karyn, and said out loud, "Well, those baggy clothes have to go." Karyn's shirt and jeans disappeared, leaving her in her underwear. "Oh, she should take more pride in what's under them, too. No more Hanes." Karyn's white cotton bra and panties shifted, shrunk, took on lacy patters, and darkened to black.

"That's better," said Sarah, "Now we've got something to work with. Karyn should know about how to make her body look good. She should know how to pick out a skirt." A black pencil skirt appeared on Karyn's hips, slinking down to the middle of her thighs, but she remained topless. Jon just sat where he was and gawked. "And she never wears any shirts with a neckline. She should know about layering to get the look she wants." A black camisole covered Karyn's torso, and then a clingy white shirt with a plunging neckline fell on top of that, showing a triangle of black just below her cleavage.

"Moving up. She should do more with her hair." Sarah was starting to get into this. It was like having one of the geekiest girls in school as her personal Barbie doll. Karyn's hair flew upwards and wrapped itself into a bun. "No, too prudish." The hair fell back down, and then split off into low pigtails that came down over the front of her shoulders. "Too farm girl." The hair started pulling itself back upwards, but split widthwise this time. The bottom half just lay flat, while the top half worked itself into a braid and fell down on top. "That'll work," said Sarah.

"Why doesn't she ever wear any make up?" Sarah wondered. Then Karyn's complexion smoothed out as foundation applied itself to her face. Then a dark red lipstick. Blush. Eyeliner. Karyn's face was made up almost the same as Sarah always did her own face. "Okay, just a few more details." Studs appeared in Karyn's ears. A shiny pair of white heels appeared on her feet, then an equally shiny black purse appeared on her elbow.

"I think we're done," Sarah said. "Now talk," she ordered her doll.

The new Karyn jumped up and cried, "Oh my god! What am I doing in this get up?"

Sarah frowned. "The new Karyn always dresses like that."

Karyn blinked, and seemed to calm down. "I know I dress like this now, but it seems weird. I'm not into fashion or anything."

"Yes you are," Sarah decided to push the envelope, "In fact, you know more about fashion than me. You know what? You know more about fashion than anyone in school."

"Well, yeah, that's what I mean," said Karyn, "These shoes are Dolce knock-offs. Why am I wearing them?"

Sarah grinned. Then she thought for a second. "If new Karyn is going to be Jon's best friend, she should be friends with me. Why would we be friends? Oh, I know!" Sarah started giggling, "I always come to you for fashion advice, and you always come to me for advice on boys and celebrities. We trade!"

"Well, yeah," Karyn said, her voice obtaining a somewhat snobby air to it, "You keep shopping at Target, and I keep crushing on guys at random. We've gotta help each other out."

Sarah turned to Jon. "Well?" she asked, "Which one do you prefer, the Karyn that you know," Sarah motioned to the troll, "or the new Karyn?" She motioned for the fashionista in front of her.

Jon just stared. It was like night and day. He had a heap of ugly in front of him on one hand, and a model of elegance on the other. The contrast was incredible. "N-new Karyn. New Karyn!" Jon stuttered.

The troll faded away, and Sarah started to laugh. The new Karyn slinked over to the bed and smoothed her skirt as she sat down between Jon and Sarah, putting an arm around each of them. With the troll gone, Jon started to calm down, and looking over and seeing the two beautiful girls next to him, he couldn't help but smile, as one by one, pieces of his room began to disappear. Soon all that was left was his bed and the two girls, but then those were gone as well.
