But he didn't let that spoil his good mood. Instead he went down to the athletic field. Sometimes the cheerleaders practiced early before school. If Jon went down there on a normal day, it probably would have been to "spectate," but today he had a slightly different motivation. Sarah. Was she going to be off her game today? Maybe he'd heckle her and see how she reacted. Jon was impatient to see the results of the labor that he couldn't remember.

When he got to the field Jon saw that the cheerleaders were there, but when his eyes fell on Sarah, he paused. There was something different about her this morning. She didn't look any different. He didn't think she was acting out of ordinary. It was like he was looking at her with a different filter on. Suddenly, Jon didn't quite want to be seen, so he snuck under a set of bleachers. He could see the cheerleaders, but he didn't think the cheerleaders would be able to see him.

Jon sat there for the entire practice. His eyes followed Sarah's every move like a puppy's. When he couldn't see Sarah for whatever reason, if she'd jogged back to the lockers for a minute or if she was simply behind a few other girls, he felt like something was missing. He wasn't looking at her body. He was just looking at her.

Finally, the cheerleaders packed up and moved back inside. Jon stood up and began to move, when he heard a familiar voice.

"Jon! Where the hell have you been?" Karyn ran up to him, not all too happily.

Jon was caught aback. She was right. He'd completely forgotten about her. All he could say was, "I dunno, I guess I woke up early."

"Well next time wait, or call, or something. I waited ten minutes at the corner before I gave up on you, and now we've got like two minutes before the bell rings."

Jon nodded. That was weird. They'd had the same routine for years. Why had he broken it today?

"Did you do something with the stone?" Karyn demanded.

Jon didn't want to tell Karyn about the dream wish, so he said something that wasn't quite honest. "I haven't made any wishes since two days ago."

Karyn heaved a sigh. "Come on, we don't want to be late."

The pair walked into the school building next to the locker rooms, just in time for a door to open, and a distracted Jon to walk headfirst into a just-changed Sarah. Their eyes met for a split second, then they both looked away and their faces flushed a bit.

"Sorry," Jon mumbled.

"Yeah, sorry," Sarah repeated.

Then they both went their separate ways.

"What the hell was that?" Karyn asked, feeling like she was getting more annoyed with Jon by the minute.

"What was what?" Jon asked.

"You and Sarah!" Karyn almost yelled. "You two looked like you would have started making out if I wasn't here!"

Then Jon realized what he'd been feeling all morning. How he'd been acting. He began to feel sick to his stomach. What had he done last night in Sarah's dream? Right there he resolved to go back into her head tonight, and make absolutely sure that he remembered what happened.
