Jeff Winters had been working around the house as a guard for a couple of months now. He was in his twenties, broad shouldered and did the job as a basic ‘minimum’ wage affair. He hated it when it rained and wasn’t sure really what he was protecting this place for. It was a condemned building with nothing inside anymore and a bunch of junk on the side. He heard some person inside got electrocuted… which of course he was sombre on.
Then he saw some kids messing about in the junk again. “Hey!” he yelled out. ‘Great- I’m gonna lose my job if they get hurt!’ Though… that was going to be the least of his problems.
He saw the two messing about with a strange gumball machine? Slot machine? Something with rotating gears at the back giving odd ticks. His flashlight and keys were suddenly pulled forward by the incredible magnetic force. He couldn’t let go as his fingers became wedged by the force.
He looked in alarm as… everything around him suddenly changed, with the odd zap and tingle of electricity running through him and all the other people.
Jeff fell forward, released from the magnetic force. He breathed what seemed to be… warm and very humid air. “Oh… what the heck…”
The machine had some numbers on it…
“208-267-781 BC”
The two teens he had tried to stop were nearby as well as some pieces of junk that had come through with them. He felt an odd existential fear as he realized that they were in some kind of… jungle. The trees were incredibly tall and made of hardened bark. The sound of insects incredibly loud with a constant buzz of energy.
“Huh…” Adam scratched his head as he took in the strange surroundings. He identified the plants and breathed in air that was… clearly higher than 21% oxygen. He knew that feeling quite well when he made oxygen in chemistry class. He felt a little lightheaded. “Oh… that’s… peculiar.”
Barry was also starting to regain consciousness. He had fallen into some tall grass and was also trying to get to grips with where they were. “Why… are we in a jungle?” He looked alarmed and alerted that they were now somewhere quite… dangerous.
“What are you kids doing with that stuff!” Jeff suddenly got angry. “This is private property!”
Adam dusted off some of the pollen as he stared at Jeff “Yes… well… the house isn’t here now…” he tried to explain yielding somewhat instinctually to the fact that Jeff was the one wearing a uniform.
The security guard pursed his lips. “You kids are in a lot of trouble! I’ll… I’ll have to call someone.” He took out his phone and saw there was of course- no signal. He seemed perplexed not quite wanting to believe where he might be…
Then there was a sudden roar making all three gasped in fear.
“That wasn’t a…” Jeff turned slightly to his right… seeing a dinosaur peeking overhead the trees.
A dinosaur…
Jeff stared at the creature as it looked at him back. “oh…Mother…”
The dinosaur seemed to be watching them… a T-Rex… clearly confused at just ‘what’ it was looking at. Creatures…standing on two legs… no scales… not insects… they smelled tasty though. It breathed in their scent…
“Do we run? They only see movement right?” Said Barry. “We just got to stand still…”
Adam glanced to his friend. Maybe it was best not to tell him how screwed they were. “… well… I think… we … best run.”
The giant T-rex approached them. Curious… but hungry. Very hungry.
Jeff wasn’t sure what to do but he slowly tapped a button on his torch… an alarm that would normally be used to signal to others distress and well- why not use it now?
The alarm went off. The T-rex heard the sound with even more confusion! It suddenly took a few steps back as this ‘noise’ came out that was not exactly anything an animal could make! It started to roar in response seeing it as some kind of challenge.
Adam grabbed the slot machine and started to move. It was surprisingly light enough to hold. “Run! Run! RUN!”
The T-Rex though startled briefly began to give chase… Nature’s most dangerous predator of the Jurassic period was chasing after them!
