At lunch, Gladys quickly ate her meal and headed to the gym, changing into her gym clothes to try out. The cheerleading squad was already there in their uniforms.
The cheerleading coach, one of the school's two gym teachers, the other being the one who coached the football team, lined not only the cheerleaders, but the prospective ones up. "We'll be doing one of our regular practice drills. It is simple. The girls will demonstrate it one time, then will do it with you so you can follow along. The best of you will get paired up with one of them for another drill. Just remember, those of you who do well, if you don't make it this time, and another opening becomes available, we'll consider you for it first."
Gladys watched the cheerleaders do the drill, and then mimicked the move herself. She moved with a grace expected of her by anyone, especially herself. She didn't feel winded either, as if her endurance had somehow increased. She looked around at the other perspective cheerleaders and was clearly outmatching them.
It was strange, but she didn't worry so much about it. She felt rather good about it, especially the extra energy she suddenly had.
