Athena, though she looked like a prep, and everyone thought she was a prep (and though she didn't recongize it, her voice had increasingly taken on the liting inflections and exasperated tones of a prep) she still felt like who she had been before, a goth. It was like this will all of them, Biff still thought he could take everyone in the room, though his body was now much scrawnier, Nadine had rolled her eyes at nearly every event that had happened since her change and was speaking sacastically and in a lower tone of voice. They all thought of themselves as what the people they used to be, but it was Athena who decided to act on that feeling.
"You know what, no." she said to Sarah, who had been chastising her for hanging around with this rabble. This surprised Sarah.
"What do you mean no? You can't miss practice, It's the single most important thing about us."
" I mean I don't want to be a cheerleader, or a prep for that matter." This sort of speech surprised everyone, who all thought of her as the consumate prep.
"Oh really? and what would you rarher be then? a Nobody?" Sarah thought of this as some sort of sick joke. Why would anybody who had what Athena have want to throw it all a way, it just didn't make sense.
"I'm not a nobody! I'm Athena Devires," the sting of being called a nobody struck hard for Athena, it was important that she matter. Her voice took on more emotion as she spoke her name, never before had she said it with such pride, as if being herself mattered, as if she was the most important person in the room.
"But what does that mean? Athena Devires" Sarah said in a nearly mocking tone. Athena had never thought about it before, so she just looked on like a person with no answer, so Sarah continued. " Don't you know? Lets see if they know." She turned her attention to the others, "who is Athena?"
They all shugged and said the same thing, Biff out of intimidation, which made Athena feel powerful.
Dispite herself when Nadine said it, she said it with venom and disgust in her voice, which to Athena felt like being rejected by her former self, whose role Nadine now filled. When Jay said it on the other hand it was with admiration, as if she deserved some sort of worship for being what she was, which made her feel special. It was all the same word.
Prep. It was a consensus, and just to put a stamp on it, Sarah said it too and as she said it something felt funny in Athena, it felt like Sarah was right.
"God, fine, whatever." Athena said, sounding more like a prep than ever. "I'll be at practice" She started to walk towards the gym with Sarah.
Biff protested as they shashayed away. "But what about the notes!"
Athena, now more annoyed with the idea of having to talk to those people, who felt below her, responded. "I Said Whatever!" And then as a final entrance into her new place in life, punctuate her exit by yelling out. "God! Losers!" and she disapeared down the hall.
