I'm right wing on some things, left wing on others. Like most people? Maybe?
I don't believe Jon 'should' have that much power, but in the universe he does... and that's just how the story starts. There are three other 'elements' who can overpower a single one if need be...Lucas being one of them. if one person makes wishes that are so crazy the others would almost certainly stop him and re-write reality if required.
I agree that in a fully realistic setting, Jon would be in a heep of trouble... and that is probably why, the majority of people do not know it was him. Why that's the case will be explained later on.
Maybe Jon should turn himself in? But the reality is, he just didn't know what would happen and life has gone on to another generation, in story.
The transformations in our universe are not inherently cruel, and have purpose behind them. There is consideration on if a particular mind can 'handle' them. If it went really badly for them, they would likely change back.
Nobody has 'died' from the changes brought to them, and have often had their lives enhanced. Misery was always intended to be short term, as one gets to experience another way to perceive and exist the universe.
It's a plot device, not a nuke. It doesn't kill, it won't destroy land or people, its just magic entering in the world changing life in different ways. that's how I saw it, I'm not making a judgement on if its right or wrong. But if such an object exists, it was always bound to be used by somone eventually.
