Do you believe in private ownership of nuclear weapons? Private ownership of bacteriological weapons?

It's interesting how the same people who'll say how the US is evil and can't be trusted are suddenly willing to say that Jon can be trusted. He owns a nuclear weapon, bacteriological weapon, and doomsday device all rolled into one. And he's used it--in the Iridescent story, Jon's done more to harm people than the US ever has. It's fiction, but the people in the story don't know that Jon is fictional and the US is real, and within the context of the story, Jon is more of a threat and has caused more actual damage than a dozen US-led coups.

Lucas isn't perfect. She is, yes, prejudiced against militaries.

Here's what bothers me about "well, it's just the character's attitude, the writer doesn't necessarily endorse it". Most of the time, as shown by what The Weirdo later says in this thread, when the character talks like that, the writer does endorse 90% of it with a little exaggeration thrown in and it's just used as an excuse for an author soapbox.

And of course Obama isn't a Communist, but the US didn't support Al Qaeda either. (There's a Wikipedia article on this subject--and it's carefully worded to avoid saying that that's actually true). You've got a left-wing conspiracy theorist arguing with a right-wing conspiracy theorist. But the left-wing theories seem to be the one bleeding into the stories here.
