Personally, I could feel their hostility from here. Maybe this was the racism setting in. It has to show itself at some point. "Is there something wrong with me relying on the intrepid city guard?" I asked. They had nothing to say to that. They just asked me what the culprits looked like and what direction they went in. I left out the young drider, but I told them about the wererats. They then left and looked around for them. Because of me, a squad of their comrades were murdered in the streets while I was sitting pretty in my house. As someone that can look on the other side of things, I could see why they would be pissed off at me. Regardless, I was not going to walk into an obvious trap. That was why when I heard someone knocking at my door again the next day, I groaned and opened the door. The same drider from the day before was there again. He was angry. I could tell because he had the same brown exoskeleton covered with red dots ringed with white. "You need to come with me!" he snapped at me. It was not going to happen. I said "I might if you tell me what it's about. What is it?"

Quickly, the drider looked side to side. He lowered his voice as he leaned forward. He said "You better come with me if I tell you." I nodded and he said "We want you to help us steal a big thing. It's worth money and we want it for our den." "What are you trying to steal?" I asked. The drider smirked and said "The ducal diadem. We have a plan to get it." The duke's diadem was a beautiful golden crown with a single ruby with 2 diamonds on either side of it. It was a symbol of the power of the duchy and the duke's power. It would be chaos if they managed to steal it. On the other hand, they would be insane to think they could steal it without any resistance or that it would be unguarded. All of the duchy's most powerful and famous knights would be there. While not as stacked with buffs as the generic city guard, they would all be super powerful. That would not be something that I wanted to get into at all. My reputation was already that of a villain. If I added "criminal" to that, I would have the whole capitol baying for my blood. Maybe the rural areas too. I was too high profile to be a thief.

Ready to take me to their lair, the young drider was looking at me expectantly. I called for the guards again. He looked so betrayed by that; it was almost funny. I quickly shut the door before he could lunge at me. The guards all had silver weapons this time. They absolutely slaughtered the wererats that covered the escape of the drider. I told them the plan they had told me about. When I did, they looked grim. They asked that I go with them to make a report. I rolled my eyes and declined. Unfortunately, that was not an option. They took me to the barracks to wait. After telling them, they took made me wait. A knight from the duke's court came for me. He told me to go with him and tell the duke what I had heard. Once again, I had little choice in the matter. We made our way to the palace, and I was brought in front of the duke on his throne. Knowing I was going to be there, the duke's son and nephew and their families were there. They watched my matches in the colosseum. "Kyo, you are known by many names. I have heard you have something important to tell the court." the duke said.

I told the court about the plan to steal the diadem from under the court's noses. The duke was not wearing it at the moment. It was a symbol of power, so it was not that necessary to have on hand for every little matter. There was, at the moment, no reason for him talking to his court and some minority gladiator. The court was sufficiently scandalized. With that being the case, the duke had to do something. "We have dealt with this so-called thieves' guild for far too long. Not only are these vile criminals oppressing my people, but they are also spreading the dreaded disease of lycanthropy. We must root out and destroy this den of sin and evil." he said as he stood from his throne. The court began to applaud him. I just stood there and looked at him. He looked back at me and said "For warning us of this grave threat, you deserve a reward. Not only have you saved the diadem, but you have brought excitement and joy to the capitol. Name it and it shall be yours." His family seemed to be approving of it. Most of the court did not really approve, but they were not going to get in his way.
