(Author's Note: I enjoyed Hikaru's addition, but there were a few things I tried to account for below, and I did expand a few things. In the present, Karyn is at Jon's house in the afternoon. When we left Jenny, it was the morning of Wednesday, April 30, 1986. Which would have been a school day.)
The easiest way to find out, needless to say, was in Karyn's hand. "I wish I knew what Jon wished for, and what that meant."
It told her. And she was shocked at how reckless Jon was with the wish. What if it turned the whole town into werewolves or something? But it didn't. Jon's wish had taken him into the past to replace a girl just moments before she died. It had also allowed Karyn to remember--otherwise, if Jon had changed the past, Karyn would think it had always been that way.
She wondered if the stone could fix this, or even if it should.
In the past--certainly not meanwhile, since it was years ago, but from Jon's point of view it was just after he'd realized Jenny was supposed to have died--Jon was trying to live as Jenny. He really didn't have much choice on the matter, and the shock he'd experienced was starting to wear off.
From what he could gather, Jenny was staying with his own family for a week, and her parents were out of town. But, when they'd heard about what had happened, they'd cut their trip short and were heading home. He was not sure what he'd do when they showed up.
Somehow he felt that he could instinctively do at least some of the things expected of Jenny--nobody was going to say he was a fake just because he couldn't remember how to put on a bra. He was in Jenny's body, and while he didn't have any of her memories, he seemed to have her muscle memories.
Unlike most time travel movies, he wasn't in the past because he needed to change something. He needed to get back as soon as possible to avoid changing something. And the stone hadn't come with him. How could he search for a way to time travel?
The best way would probably be to find his grandfather. If the magic stone wasn't the first piece of magic he ran across, if he was familiar with magic already, he might believe a story about time travel.
Fortunately, Jon was staying in his grandfather's house. Finding his grandfather would be a simple matter of waiting for him to get home. He had no idea when that would be though.
But even if Jon got help, would it be too late? Had he already changed his future? If the moment of Jon's conception was even a second earlier or later, he might be born as a different person. When he got back to his own time, he could be different--or a girl--or even twins...assuming he was even born in the first place.
There wasn't much he could do about that, though. He'd seen enough time travel movies to know all the bad things that could happen, and he didn't actually know how time travel worked.
If he wished himself back to the future, what happened to Jenny? He had this feeling, in the pit of her stomach that she was gone...not that he was sure how he knew that.
He'd at least gotten through a shower and a change of clothes without incident. He doubted that would change anything in the future.
His grandmother...Mrs. Doyle, he corrected himself, was waiting for him when he came out of the bedroom. "I know you're still a bit unsettled, but are you up for going to school today?"
Jon panicked...both choices seemed equally difficult. He took a breath. He couldn't lock himself away. For one, Jenny's family probably wouldn't let him. He needed to act normally. And normal meant school...
