Karyn arrived at Jon's house, walking past Mikey, who was on the couch watching cartoons.
She entered Jon's room, and was surprised to find he wasn't there...surprisingly though, the wishing stone was lying in the middle of the floor. She picked it up.
Jon wouldn't leave it in the middle of the floor. Something must be wrong. "I wish I knew where Jon was," she said.
The stone flashed, and a piece of paper appeared. It was a clipping from the Lake Point Chronicle...the community newspaper. It was a weekly paper that reported on local news.
It was a picture of a car accident, and a bunch of onlookers. "Thursday, May 1, 1986...Drunk driver kills teen...Mayor Thomas calls for action...residents of Grove Street are in mourning after the death of a local teenager. Jenny Pierce, 14, was crossing the street Tuesday night when she was hit. The car was driven by Raymond Roche, 20, who is in critical condition at Lake Point Hospital..."
She continued reading the article, uncertain why it was important, till she got to the last part. She stuck the rock in her pocket and bounded down the stairs to the kitchen. "Mrs. Madison, I found this in Jon's room," she said, handing over the article.
Linda Madison looked at her. "I..where did he find this?" She seemed surprised.
"Is that you?" She asked, pointing to the corner of the picture, trying to
Linda nodded. "I knew the girl in the article. We were best friends. Her parents were out of town for the week. She was staying with us, and she forgot her math textbook. So she went across the street to get it, and...But, why was this in Jon's room?"
"I don't know," Karyn said. "But it was on the floor, and he wasn't there..."
"I didn't see him leave, and I've been down here since he went upstairs," Linda said. All the cheeriness had vanished from her face, understandably so, to be reminded of a horrible event from years earlier.
"I'll go ask Zoe if she's seen him," Linda said, heading into the living room. Karyn stood there, and suddenly, the paper in her hands changed..
"Thursday, May 1, 1986...Local business leaders blast Thomas for not taking action. Jenny Pierce, 14, was crossing the street Tuesday night when she was nearly hit by an out of control vehicle. The teen was miraculously unharmed. The car was driven by Raymond Roche, 20, who is in critical condition at Lake Point Hospital..." The picture had changed as well. Instead of a gurney with a body bag on it, there was a picture of a police officer carrying an unconscious teenage girl.
The article changed back again. "Jon," Karyn mumbled. "What the hell did you wish for?"
