Leonard's hand reached down to pet his head and Jon backed away, still not liking it. That caused Leonard to look at him with suspicion. "What's wrong with Jon today?"
"He keeps telling me what to do," Sydney said, innocently.
"If you keep letting him act like he's in charge," Leonard said, "he'll never do anything you say. My cousin had that problem with his Saint Bernard. He can't get him to stay off the couch."
"Maybe he likes the couch?" Sydney suggested.
Leonard shrugged. "Well, I'll see you later," he said, heading off.
"He's nice," Sydney said to Jon. "I think you should let him pet you next time. He used to pet me. Maybe he doesn't like my new hind legs."
Well, I'll be happy to take them back any time you want, Jon barked, somewhat sarcastically. He was starting to feel some resentment toward Sydney, which he realized was misplaced. She was completely innocent in all this. It was his own stupid mistake. But how could he convince her to wish things back to normal without telling her about the stone...which could make things worse?
"I like them," Sydney said. "I want to play with them more. And the paws...umm...hands," she corrected herself.
