Death should not exist in this world... not really. Not quite the same way as it did in the reality that Earth had existed in- or at least, once existed in. Maybe a playful kind of death could, or some other being that kept things 'fresh'. Though this world was always fresh, always new. So new, it was ancient old and born dead.
Death observed this 'new world' with a sigh. She got of her horse, setting down carefully as the loving animal disappeared, sending itself back to her realm. Immediately she saw the grass under her feet grow, wither, and die. "Hm, all this lives now," she thought to herself. That may take some getting used to. And where there was life... so she would follow. The ancient and oldest rule of all. She didn't have to walk far. Indeed, travelling across space was far easier in this world then on others. She didn't really know a lot about this world, given that life here was still in it's infancy.
Would humans really attempt to colonise this reality? Once they understood what this place was, she suspected they would run back to their safe corner. She became aware of the curious humans, syphoning the energy of this world. Humans were makers after all, and with these new resources they could make so many new things. Oh, were they in for such terrifying truths... and she would as always, be there to guide them to their fate.
Then she sensed Lucas... curious drew her closer, as she observed her. She certainly had not intended to reveal herself, but Lucas turned meeting her eyes to the spectre, pulling out her sword.
"Come on out!"
It was not easy for death to be startled, only a true angel could manage that. Oh... with that thought, she let herself out of the shadows. "...Lucas dear, that is no way to greet an old friend," she said appearing in her full glory. Her black cloak resting behind her in the wind, with a simple white rose on a lapel. She was the very image of a goth-girl.
The angel gasped seeing her. "Death! Oh... come to play another game?" Lucas put away her sword, in a somewhat neutral flourish.
Death shook her head. "It seems you are something... quite special. You are no longer on my list dear. Quite... concerning really. I've only done that once before. Though I suppose, I should have realised it would have consequences... given all this."
A fairy popped out of Lucas's pocket. Makepeace stared at Death... "I... I know you. I've seen you before."
The spectre bowed formally. "Ah... general. Yes, we courted a few times, I suppose" the gothic woman grinned, rubbing the back of her hair with an air of mischievousness about her. "I've always liked soldiers..."
Makepeace gritted her jaw, her eyes wide with anger...
"You hate me, little fairy?" asked the gothic woman sounding almost hurt. "Well, I suppose that is the normal reaction."
"I despise you," spat the fairy. "If I had my gun, I would shoot you to whatever hell you-"
At the outburst Lucas placed her hand over the fairy's head. A little magic left her fingers, as Makepeace fell silent. "Hush little fairy," smiled Lucas amiably as she stuffed her back in her pocket. "The big ones need to talk."
Death and Lucas looked over each other for a while. Two titans, just... doing a job. Performing a role. Though Lucas wasn't entirely sure what her role was to be here, while Death knew exactly what it was going to be. The Reaper of Souls... Lucas protected them. Yet they could not be enemies... could they?
"You look... nice as ever," thought Lucas with a shrug.
"This was the form you gave me. I have seen no reason to change it," the gothic woman said with a shrug.
"Can... you tell me what's going on here? What is this place... where are we in the universe..."
Death chuckled. "Not quite what you imagined is it. For once, I'm not entirely sure. But I can give you a few thoughts based on my own perspective. Do you remember when you nearly destroyed your world by going past the veil? You were so curious to see the mechanisms behind."
"... I remember," Lucas said not too fond of the memory.
Death nodded. "You found the curtain, as if the world were a stage. This... is the city, behind the stage. Where all the characters are conceived... created... all things here, make the things on your universe. Concepts exist here, and when they go... it is as if they never existed. Good thing most of them are eternal, mm?"
Lucas gasped as she stared. "But... if you are here..."
"Then, apparently, some concepts are not Eternal. Not...any more. Am I here to kill the speed of light, perhaps? Shall I end the shape of trees, slugs for those things- will never have been. Perhaps I can even end the concept of nations themselves... or particular ones."
"N-Nations?!" Lucas looked wide eyed at that, and even the fairy in her pocket started to squirm.
"Oh yes, the aspects of your world all exist here in a physical body. Why... America is a little child fishing down the river. Playful, but has just a bit of a temper. Brazil exists too... all of them do. But of course, so does... Earth. You brought Her here. The one that binds everyone, and every concept that has ever existed. If she were to die here...
"Oh... God," Lucas swallowed. That's what this was. If any nation controlled this world, then 'everything' was theirs. A war was reduced to just finding 'one person', or thing... and then...
"I can end them all, from this world. Humans would have never existed... if one killed the concept of 'humanity'."
"Enough I- I understand." Lucas growled. Would humans really be that stupid though? Having gone through such changes in history, why resort to any kind of war? Why... Things were better on Earth then ever. The changes brought a natural need to stop most wars as one worked out how to deal with the new reality. Why would anyone want to start a fight now? No... there was still more to this, she was sure of that.
"Wonderful..." Death nodded. "Though I'm afraid I have some business to attend to."
"Wait- you said... this might have been your fault? Why?" Lucas stopped her briefly, her wings flaring out.
"... I made an exception. One woman you despise... Anneza. She is as immortal as you Lucas, and I know you may feel she does not deserve it. Believe me, nobody does... but it was her continued existence that made all this possible. "
