Authors Notes: This is a story, set in the Iridescent sun universe. An attempted sequel, to explore some new possibilities following a post transformed society and its social consequences.
Important points before adding to this: Assume that the reader has no knowledge or interest in reading Iridescent sun... this is a new story. Any characters appearing must be given some kind of introduction to know what is going on. (Though I certainly encourage you to read Iridescent sun!)
Following this, I will introduce the universe... and the basic ideas of the previous story to work from.
An Introduction
something very strange happened in Earth's recent history.
One day, the sun changed.
It went from its normal slightly yellow hue, to a rainbow coloured sphere in the sky.
An Iridescent sun.
One could liken it to God's personal soap bubble, showering the Earth with every colour imaginable and lighting the sky in dazzling light.
People who were directly exposed to the sunlight, transformed. The type of change varied greatly, and did not seem to obey any particular rule. Sometimes they would become a mythological species, from the well known to the exotic. A gender or age change was not unheard of either.
The only true constant, was that they tended to be 'Interesting', if one looked at it with an objective eye. The new being would have something captivating and curious about them, that drew the eye of and sparked the imagination in action as well as appearance.
It turned out to be very fortunate as Earth was threatened with non-existence: to never exist in the past, present or future. This situation would have eventually spilled through the entire cosmos. The new sun- as if responding to such a dire need, awoke the fundamental forces of the universe, personified as 'The Numbers'... taking the form of magic girls. They and their allies prevailed, against non-existence and secured the future of humanity and the changed.
The undefined was defeated... that which Earthlings had considered 'Enemy'.
The sun stayed as a rainbow and for a time after and people thought... it would be forever; that humans will one day all change into these strange creatures, even with this victory known only to the few. Humans could not hide in the dark forever... But it was not to be. The new sunlight lasted a mere six months before just as mysteriously, turning back to normal, and in so doing turned many of the changed back to normal too. These became the 'once changed'.
It became a defining moment in Earth's history. However, the sun could still act on the never-changed, due to the occasional iridescent solar flare... though it did not seem to happen quite as often now. It did not affect the 'once-changed' either...
With the sun changing back, people thought it was the end of the story. But it is never that simple.
This story begins, 5 years after the sun changed...
