What are we ?

These biological creatures were strange. Their individuality did not simply exist on the surface, they were individuals within. It was a gross version of their own existence, done by chemical and biological processes.

We are atoms the trillions upon trillions spoke. Every single atom that made up the creature, they had become. Carbon, Oxygen, Nitrogen, and other simple elements. They had fallen so deeply into the creature's existence they were bound to it. But neither were they themselves any more- it was not as if they were anything to begin with. They were perfectly happy to be atoms, but the drive to rise out of it existed. To combine, to form a cohesion once more.

Rise

As one they all ascended to the next level up. They became the proteins and DNA, all things that were combination of atoms. There were far less of them as they merged into this new system. Their entire world was simply replication. Very ordered on an individual term, but a hideous complex when it was known just what they were part of.

Rise

So again, they rose further. They became the cells. Distinct cells, all individuals, but working towards the whole still. What a strange existence this was. They were confused as they continued to become defined into the various aspects that made up the greater whole of the specimen. No- not defined, now they were what they were. They were understanding this, gaining knowledge of what each part 'knew'.

Rise

As cells they rose again and became the organs. It was at this transition that they realised how strange their new existence was. Millions of them merged, becoming smaller each time, but bringing something to the greater whole. Now as organs, they had a very primal, very basic understanding of their needs.

I am the Stomach, I require food
I am the heart, I need to pump blood
We are the kidneys, We need to filter the blood Another spoke in a very similar vain, being the identical organ. Patterns of duplication existed in this body. That was curious indeed.

I am the liver, I need to metabolise
We are the ovaries. We are producing the hormones for appropriate growth.

Every organ, in the creature, had a perfect understanding of its discrete, isolated existence. But the creature was not simply flesh and blood, but also thought. Millions of them existed in the mind, merging and coalescing into distinct patterns of ideas. They had not taken over the creature, nor had they placed anything new... but every part had a voice. The distinct aspects that made up the individual in it's own mind were now fighting each other for a domination of the whole. Yet as organs they had to compromise, why couldn't the mind do the same? Slowly it was, but the battle seemed a lot slower then the one they faced as organs.

In a few heart beats, most of the mind had indeed formed a compromise, though with two distinct factions still yet to find any common ground to work with. The organs had leant their allegiance to the aspect that seemed to be making the most sense from the confusion.

The first said. I am female!

The second said. I am male!

The body checked and knew that the first one had to be the correct one. The body knew what it was now. The facts were undeniable.

I want to be a mummy someday!

This was compatible with the reproductive organ's primal desires, so they merged with the first personality. It is strange that the other personality could have been so wrong. What strange thoughts it had? How could it be that wrong? Clearly the product of an errant thought. They had little time to debate it though, as they merged.

I'm a magic girl an' I want to help people!

The eyes reported that they were indeed wearing a magic girl uniform. So this had to be true as well. The mind reported that the Enemy was going to attack and it was their job to defend reality. This all seemed very reasonable as memory was checked and checked again to verify. So again, they merged as the other 'faction' was slowly quashed by the vastly stronger primary faction. The second faction was still fighting for its basic existence, but they now had domination. For all that happened, they now formed their new cohesion. Their existence for being, made up of all the thoughts and patterns that existed on the start of their journey to its end.

"I am Lilly! I am a magic girl! I want to help Jenny and Artemis an' everyone!"

Of course she was.
