The universe was asking Karyn to choose, if she ever agreed something might happen. Of course Karyn had no idea that the stone was waiting for her to choose her own sibling and so she kept on not doing it, missing request after request, she haplessly continued on her day, and the stone got impatient and insistent. Instead of manipulating people into off hand comments now the stone was creating desire.
Someone made a comment to Sarah about how she and Karyn could be twins, and suddenly Sarah liked the idea of having a twin, she couldn't say why, maybe it was the ego having more of herself in the world, but she suddenly saw Karyn not as a rival, but as a project...how much work would it take to actually remake Karyn in her image? What would it take to mold this clay? The wheels in her mind turned with joyful conniving wonder.
Similarly Kayla walked the halls and caught sight of Karyn, who she suddenly saw as her idol. Kayla looked up to Karyn, thought the world of her, here was a girl who was pretty but not vain, socially assured without being popular or stuck up, friendly, kind, relaxed, all in a way that didn't seem out of Kayla's grasp. If only Kayla was a little bit less shy, more pretty, more confident, less...less...herself, she could see herself being what she wanted to be...being like Karyn. All of this was in Kayla's mind and Karyn had no idea.
Then there was Jon, who in the locker room overheard two jocks ranking the girls they would like to sleep with. Sarah was of course at the top of the list, but everyone agreed on that so the conversation moved on, Athena was a surprising choice of one of the guys, Nadine another, both ideas born out of fetishtic dreams of defiling or being defiled. The shock came when Karyn came up, and everyone agreed she would be a great lay. Everyone except Jon. His mind just wouldn't go there, it couldn't, it felt like breaking nature to think of Karyn as anything more than a friend, sure she was the person he was closest to, and he supposed her recent wish had improved her looks a little...but to think of kissing her would be like kissing his dog...no worse...like kissing his sister! He didn't even like hearing the other guys talk about it.
This work went on throughout the school. Athena had suddenly realized her perfect recruit for her coven would be Karyn, despite this making no sense. Nadine found herself praying in particular for no reason that Karyn would join her at church. There was suddenly this draw to Karyn, this need to include her in there lives, and the second Karyn said yes to any of it, she would find herself with a new, annoying yet joyful, younger sibling.
