No one wanted to answer me. They were busy looking around the altar. I looked around and saw Daniel was killed in the battle. "I am so sorry. Daniel really was a great person. Kind and always thinking about his brother and the church." NPCs did not get respawned. If they died, they better had been adventurers blessed by the church or a companion of a Player with Resurrection magic. Otherwise they were dead for good. In this way, the story could progress organically. Even the king or an archmage could die and it would just spawn several event chains. A succession dispute could easily lead to civil war or purges. An archmage's duties going unfulfilled could have dire consequences on the land. There was no way Daniel had some major backing. He was just the younger brother of a young cleric in the Common district. "Let's get our revenge. We need to launch a counterattack or they might strike again." I said. Father Jones said "Heh! As much as I'd like to put those heretics to the pyre myself, there is a procedure. Go to the cathedral. They might be under attack too." I left right away.
Questions unanswered, I just had to accept the quest and rush to the High district. On the way, I was ambushed by several cultists. They had magic and weapons. I had my weapons and my hooves. I cut through them all like a knife through butter. There were several guards that saw be being attacked, but they did not interfere until I had killed them. Then they went to the bodies and made sure they were actually dead. I just rolled my eyes and went on my way. When I made it to the cathedral, I burst through the doors and called for the clergy. A monk with a lantern approached me angrily. I told him the news and he was alarmed. "I'll get the archpriest. Wait here!" he yelled as he ran off. Several monks, clerics and the archpriest were gathered. I told them about what happened they did not believe me and I had to submit to a spell that would force me to tell the truth. I let them do it. When I told the group again, they were very concerned. "Who could have done this?" one of the monks asked the archpriest. Just as finished getting it out, the doors burst open again. Demihuman cultists came in.
Over 20 of them came in and they were led by a human that smirked at us. "Those are the evil clergy that is oppressing you. Slay them in the name of our lord!" he said in a crazed tone. They then became hostile and began engaging us in mortal combat. I took the right flank and let the others take the rest. The human boss seemed content to let the demihuman cultists fight. I was having none of that. I charged him and forced him to draw a blade to block me. "Who are you working for!?" I demanded as we locked blades. He just laughed before glaring at me. "I don't answer to 'taur scum!" he insulted. I lashed out with a hoof and caught him in the shin. That crippled him and the damage knocked him out. "I hope the inquisitors take their time with you." I said before turning to see the rest of the battle. All of the cultists were dead aside from one. There was a lizardkin that was running roughshod over the others. The clerics and monks were all dead aside from 3. They were hiding behind the light shield created by the arch priest. The lizardkin was attacking and making scratches. "What the hell?" I said.
Just sneaking up behind him did not work. His tail lashed at me and took half my health. That was not normally possible against a level 51 character from a demihuman like him as an NPC. I instantly knew that the Devils were behind this. It was just a question of which ones and why. I went back to the human and took him hostage. It was worth a shot. "Stop it or this man is dead." I shouted. The lizardkin turned and saw me. He chuckled and said "I don't care what happens to that dumb human." I just charged him and knocked him out with my hoof. "These two should be taken to be dealt with before they wake up." I said. The light shield faded and the archmage looked at me. "Thank you very much, centaur. It is thanks to you that we were able to survive this all out assault. We are in your debt." I smiled and said "All I would want is to join the Church of the Sky. Is that even possible?" I asked. I already knew the answer. I did all of the five quests I needed. I helped Shalo go to Orido and to the garden. I delivered correspondence and convinced the blacksmith to train the militia. It was time.
