"Karyn?" She repeated looking a bit confused. Mrs. Black looked around the room. By chance she spotted the slightly opened door of Karyn's wardrobe. She went over to it and pulled it open where she spotted Sarah.
"Who are you?" Mrs. Black asked rather crossly and confused. "And what are you doing in my daughter's wardrobe?"
Sarah looked at her and gulped. "My...parents are out of town and Karyn was sleeping over at my house...but it felt so big and empty...we were going to move the sleepover here..." she lied.
"Oh...where is Karyn? I texted her earlier in the day and she said she was out with her new friend..." Mrs. Black said.
That had actually been Sarah. It was easier to impersonate Karyn by text. "You like to check in with her."
"Why wouldn't I?" Mrs. Black said. "She is my daughter. I worry about her and want to know how she is doing."
Sarah looked away, sadly. "My parents haven't called me once since they left."
Bethany Black felt sorry for the girl. She put a sympathetic arm on Sarah's. "I'm sorry...but...you shouldn't have come in without telling me. Is there someone you can call?"
"The school counselor gave me her number if I had a problem," Sarah whispered, reaching for the business card and offering it to Mrs. Black.
