"Councilwoman," a voice said. "I'm sorry to keep you waiting..." It was Debbie Stein. She was uncertain why she was speaking up...she was just the secretary...
"But our Principal has been delayed by another matter. I've rearranged the schedule of your visit to meet with our library media specialist first..." She looked over at Barb Harris..."Oh, Barbara, would you join us please?"
Debbie's voice was already taking on a different tone...like Allison, it was one of authority, and seemed out of place on the woman, who was known for comforting students as they waited for the principal.
Barb Harris joined them, confused. Her clothes had changed into a black sweater and jeans. All three headed to the adjoining meeting room, all confused about playing out roles they weren't quite sure of.
Allison put aside her minority complaints for the time being...clearly the staff so far was much more diverse than the student body, unless they were putting on a show for her. She had issues with this radical young teacher-librarian...letting the children use social networks for schoolwork, stocking controversial books, and not dressing appropriately when meeting a person of her stature.
"Could you bring us some refreshments from the cafeteria?" Debbie asked over her shoulder before they closed the door.
