When Kendall arrived at his new home, there was a locksmith outside standing with Sandra.
The man was in the process of changing the locks, reinforcing the doors, and putting inside locks on the windows.
"What's going on here?" Kendall asked.
"I'm fixing the house. The police are gone," he said. "I'm not letting you and our child stay in an unsafe house."
"You're overreacting, dear...it's over. They'll arrest them, and it will be done."
"We've gotten flak over the years...I know there are bigots out there. But...to come when I'm not home..."
Kendall found himself trying to comfort this man, and minimize what felt to have been a horrible thing...that didn't really happen.
