"Stay away from me," Nadine snapped, then rushed down the hall. She needed to get as far away as possible. At the end of the hall, though, she stopped. Why was she running away from her best friend? No! she screamed in her head. She's not my best friend! My best friend is ... is ... She couldn't remember.
Stephanie stared at Nadine as she ran away. She had never seen Nadine act like this before. And she had known her for a very long time. Six or seven years, actually.
She hurried after her, nearly bumping into two girls coming out of the bathroom. Muttering a sorry, she continued after Nadine, and caught up with her. "Something is fucking messed up here," Nadine said.
"What?" Stephanie asked.
Jennifer looked after them. "At least she said sorry," Jennifer said. "I don't know who is worse...the cheerleaders or the goths...they both treat anyone who isn't them like dirt."
