"I'm glad I found you," Nadine said, walking over to her friend. But Tina seemed to ignore her for some reason. Both she and Paul walked away, momentarily sneering in her direction before walking around a corner and out of view. Where were they going? It was just as she feared. They didn't recognize her.
"I thought you were skipping today," a girl's voice said, to her right. She turned and saw Stephanie Wright, a Goth girl, looking directly at her.
"I was, but ..." She stopped. Why was she talking to this girl?
"Nadine? Are you okay?" Stephanie asked.
Nadine looked at the Goth girl. Stephanie ... was her friend? No! That can't be. Her friend was Tina ... Tina ... what was her last name? She just saw her a minute ago. She was with ... a boy ... a boy she knew. His name was ... she couldn't remember! What was happening to her?
"Nadine?" Stephanie asked, placing her hand on her shoulder.
"Stay away from me," Nadine snapped, then rushed down the hall. She needed to get as far away as possible. At the end of the hall, though, she stopped. Why was she running away from her best friend? No! she screamed in her head. She's not my best friend! My best friend is ... is ... She couldn't remember.
Stephanie stared at Nadine as she ran away. She had never seen Nadine act like this before. And she had known her for a very long time. Six or seven years, actually.
