The new game began, and ended shortly afterwards. Harry suspected that this was perhaps just the second time he had been witness to the full chess-playing prowess of Hermione Granger. His pieces lay in pieces on the side of the board, while hers were barely touched.

"Check mate," she smiled, as her bishop moved down the half-empty board to intercept his lonely King. Harry sighed.

"Well, a deal's a deal, right? What spell did you want me to help you practice with?"

"Actually I wanted your help with the protean charm." From her bag she pulled her Transfiguration spellbook and opened it on one of the many bookmarks. The page displayed a picture of two objects, constantly changing but always identical.

"Basically it links two objects magically," she explained. "Any changes made to the original item, for example this chest piece - " Picking up one of the pawns and brandishing her wand, she cast a quick incantation on the piece. "- are automatically propogated onto a second object... for example, you." She pointed her wand at Harry and muttered the same incantation again. He felt a strange jolt run through his body.

"For example," Hermione continued. "Engorgio!" she said, waving her wand at the pawn. It began to grow in size in her hand, and at the same time Harry felt himself swelling within his clothes. The bench creaked and groaned as he nearly doubled inside, matching the changes to the pawn.

"That's amazing, Hermione!" Harry bellowed down at her.

"Thanks!" she smiled, placing the pawn back down on the chess board. Suddenly her happy expression turned to one of confusion as the pawn, absently placed on Harry's side of the board, began to shrink back to glow and transfigure itself. "Whoops... I must have Queened it by mistake. Err, Harry I'm not entirely sure what this will do."

They both watched wide-eyed as the piece finished transforming from a lowly pawn to a Queen. Then-
