It was the Christmas holidays. Harry and Hermione sat in the Great Hall, huddled in warm coats before the log fire as snow drifted gently from the enchanted cealing and settled on the four long tables. They were playing wizards chess, although as it was their eigth game of the day they weren't playing it with particular enthusiasm; Harry in particular, who had lost all but one of the games.
It was the day before Christmas eve and the castle was all but empty of students. Hermione had kindly stayed behind to keep Harry company through the lonely days. Mostly they played games of wizards chess, but even the violent brawl-in-miniature was starting to lose its appeal.
Harry barely noticed as Hermione's queen brutally decapitated his King. "How about we make the next game the last, Hermione?"
"Okay," hermione agreed, as she reset the pieces. "Actually I was wondering if you want to make a little bet to make it more interesting," she said, with an unusually sly look in her eyes. "I've been trying to practice my transfiguration spells but it's hard without an... assistant. If you win, you have to help me with my transfiguration."
"And if I win?" Harry asked, aware to himself that it was largely hypothetical.
"I'll make you a special Christmas present," Herminone smiled.
"Sure," Harry shrughed.
