His mother isn't buying it in the least as she just shakes her head. "You stole those from the shop didn't you? Well we're just going to take those back right now." she says as she grabs his hand and starts to march him back towards the store but they notice something strange.
The store wass gone...as is the block it was on. The block had been replaced by a blind alley that led nowhere. "Did we get turned around?" Mary said, confused. She turned back to her car. That looked familiar.
"It was right here," the boy insisted.
"I know. But...we must have missed an entrance somewhere. When we get home, we'll call them and sort this out then."
They got in the car and drove, mostly in silence, the short distance to their home. As soon as they were inside, Mary settled down to some intense parenting. "Why did you steal these?" She demanded, looking at the necklaces.
"Dunno...just did," the boy insisted.
She shook her head. "You do know these are usually worn by girls, sweetheart?"
"Yeah...but...I..." He looked confused. He clearly had no idea why he wanted them.
"I want you to go to your room and think about what you've done, and try to come up with a better answer than that," she said. She took the pearl necklaces and placed them on the table while her son slunk up the stairs.
