That night, at dinner, Karyn's mother briefed her family on what she'd learned. She'd gone over to Jon's old house to introduce herself.
"Her name is Janice Adams. She just moved here. She's a widower and she's starting a new job next week. Her daughter, Taylor, is starting in your school as a Freshman. I promised her you'd show Taylor around. Apparently she isn't happy about leaving all her friends."
"Mom, why didn't you ask me first? I don't want to show her around. It's like..." Moving on and accepting Jon was gone.
"Karyn...sometimes we have to do things we don't like and we have to learn to accept that. Mrs Adams is a nice woman who just got into town and her daughter needs a helping hand. I'm not asking you to become her friend. Just a few days of your life."
She sighed. Her mother was right. It was't so horrible. She still didn't want to do it, but she doubted her mother was giving her a choice.
"I told her you'd stop by after dinner."
