Karyn Black looked out the window toward the house across the street. She missed Jon. He'd been selected for punishment, but she expected him to come home. Not only had he not, but his mother, brother, and sister had gone the following day with no word, followed by a moving truck, which had taken a bunch of boxes and all the furniture out.
The For Sale sign had been in the yard for only a day before it vanished again, then a crew of workmen...painters and such. Karyn knew the two events had nothing to do with each other, but she felt as if the workmen were erasing all traces of her best friend, leaving her with only a few pictures and memories.
The workmen were followed by a moving truck full of different boxes and furniture. Someone else was moving in.
Her thoughts were suddenly interrupted by a car driving into the driveway of the house she was looking at. It was a four door sedan, a few years old. Out of it came a woman about her mom's age, who headed toward the back and retrieved two bags, and then rapped on the passenger side. A teenager with a disinterested look and a resemblance to the woman exited the car and they both went into the house.
