"What was that farce about 'college students' about?" Jennifer asked. "We couldn't possibly be mistaken for eighteen-year-olds, could we?"
"We just might," said Karyn. "I figured it was worth a try. After all, they probably don't let just anybody into the temple."
"That's another thing," said Jennifer. "What makes you think that the powerup is going to be in this temple? Couldn't it theoretically be anywhere else in the area?"
"Well, yes," Karyn admitted, "but since the stone is apparently making us follow cliche insofar as you're being forced to quest for the item you wished for, I figured it might jump to the next cliche: the treasure is always hidden deep in some subterranean maze underneath an ancient ruin or somesuch. Even if it's not here, this is still the best place to start looking."
Jennifer frowned. "That's -another- thing," she said. "What's with the whole 'quest' thing? The way the stone has worked so far, it's completely direct and literal about granting wishes, even if they don't turn out exactly the way we expect. Why the sudden departure?"
"I don't know," Karyn mused. "If I were paranoid, I'd think that the stone is sentient or something, and enjoys screwing with people. Like the original Arabian djinni. But I'd tend to think that it's more that the stone is being logical about all this. Since you, a 'magical girl-'"
"I'm -not- a girl!" Jennifer snapped.
"You are at the moment," Karyn sighed, "whether you want to be one or not. Now, since you, a 'magical girl,' are seeking a magical powerup item, by the logic of 'magical girl' stories, you'd have to quest for it. So when you wished for such an item, the stone designed a typical quest. Or at least that's my theory on it, and I hope I'm right, because I don't like the other option."
"Me either," Jennifer agreed. "Hope the stone doesn't do this for -every- wish we make now."
Karyn nodded agreement and they finished the walk in silence.
