In a few minutes, Jennifer and Karyn were standing in the village. The people there stopped to stare at them for a moment before returning to their daily business.
"That's interesting," Karyn said. "I'd expect we'd draw a little more attention."
"Don't complain," Jennifer muttered. "You'll jinx it. Now let's check out that end building."
The building in question was a large white brick structure at the far end of the village. The sign over the door was in either Spanish or Portuguese, though neither Karyn nor Jennifer knew enough to tell. They quietly made their way down the dirt path leading to the building.
When they arrived at the door, Karyn knocked. The door was answered by an older, somewhat portly man. He greeted them in whatever language the sign was in.
"Excuse me," Karyn asked, "but do you know someone who speaks English here?"
The man looked a little surprised. "Yes," he answered. "I speak English. What can I do for you?"
Karyn smiled. "We're...um...college students. We're studying anthropology, and since it's break, we were told that there was an interesting ruin out here that we could study. Unfortunately, the luggage handlers on the plan managed to mangle the bag that had our map in it. You don't happen to know how to get there, do you?"
The man thought for a moment. "It's a little late for spring break, isn't it?"
"Well," Karyn said, "our college is a little unusual. We have our spring break a couple weeks after most do."
The man nodded. "Well," he said, "I would guess that you were directed to the old temple near here, right?"
Karyn nodded. He continued. "In that case, there's a gravel road leading north out of the village. It was built by the first teams to excavate the temple, so it leads right there. Just follow it straight and you should get there with no problems. Do you need anything else, or was the map all you lost?"
The girls thought for a minute. "We lost our flashlights," Jennifer said, "and we were going to buy some food here, but they got our money too."
The man smiled. "Those I can just give you," he said. "Come on in and I'll get you loaded up." He led them in, to the back of the building, and got them a couple flashlights and a fair supply of batteries, along with a backpack of what looked like MREs. "Do you need any help with this stuff?" he asked.
Karyn grinned. "Thanks," she said, "but you've done more than enough already. Besides, we've had to cart this much around lots of times. We'll be fine."
They thanked the man again and headed off towards the temple...
