The conversation went like that for several minutes until, suddenly, Melissa looked over at Sarah. "Can you go get me another drink?"
"Yeah, for me too," Tiffany said.
Sarah blinked. But, instead of asking why she should do such a thing, she just said, "Sure," and headed off to the cafeteria line. A few moments later, the question vanished from her mind.
She returned with their beverages. They resumed talking, but more and more, the other girls seemed to be acting almost like she wasn't there. Finally, annoyed, she cleared her throat loudly.
Both Melissa and Tiffany turned their attention toward her. She suddenly felt extremely uncomfortable and self-conscious. "Umm...nothing," she said. They resumed talking.
Sarah decided at that point it would be good to be early to class...something she'd never quite thought before. The next period she had Mrs. Trumball's English class. As soon as she came through the door, the older woman looked at her. "Oh, Sarah, there you are." She handed her a few sheets of paper. "I need you to make photocopies of these for the whole class."
Sarah blinked, but accepted the papers and headed toward the main office to make the copies. She had the oddest feeling something was off, but she couldn't quite put her finger on it.
