Jon didn't think trying to hide would be a good idea. It was best to go up and speak with whoever was up there.
He went up the stairs just as the basement door opened. Almost instantly, he was confronted with who he presumed was Steve Farber's mother.
"Who are you? What was all that noise?!?" Mrs. Farber exclaimed.
"Hey, it's that loser guy from school." Jon recognized Mike 'Moose' Matthews, Steve Farber's best friend.
"But what is he doing in my basement?" Mrs. Farber glared suspiciously at Jon.
Jon stammered for a bit. "It's hard to explain. Steve kidnapped me and was holding me prisoner down there but..."
"Who is Steve?" Mrs. Farber asked.
"Steve Farber! Your son!" Jon replied.
"I don't have a son named Steve!" Mrs. Farber shouted.
"Of course you do! Moose here is his best buddy. Why would he even be here otherwise?"
Moose looked confused. "I ... I don't even remember why I came here."
Jon realized that neither Mrs. Farber nor Moose had heard Steve's careless wish. Because of the way the wishing stone worked, neither of them would remember Steve.
What am I supposed to tell them? The truth? That there WAS a Steve but he got himself turned into a horse and I wished him away to a horse farm?
He didn't want too many more people to find out about the existance of the wishing stone. But how was he going to get out of this one? If he didn't come up with something good, there was a possibility that Mrs. Farber would call the police and have him charged with breaking and entering and vandalism.
Jon knew he had to come up with a good enough story, or something, very quickly.
