A few days later Jill, who was really James suffering from amnesia, stood over her own grave and unknowingly watched as a cat that had been transformed into a human was buried there. A good number of people were there: James parents, people he worked with, a girl he had been seeing named Karen, some old friends and his sister Linda and her fiancée Brad.
Jill sat with Linda as the service began, but she felt her mind elsewhere. She still couldn't remember anything that had happened beyond a couple of days before and she had been having these strange dreams, where she would be looking into a mirror and James would be on the other side, like her reflect and he was trying to tell her something. "I must have been closer to James than I thought." She thought as people started heading back to there cars."
Jill had ridden over with Linda and Brad, so they all went to the wake together.
"Thanks for coming Jill." Linda said as they drove. "I know we just met, but there is something about you, that I feel like I have known you for years."
"I know what you mean, its like we grew up together or something." Jill said from the backseat.
They arrived at the wake and people mingled and talked about various topics. Jill now found herself to be the center of attention to a number of guys. Several men who seemed somehow familiar were coming up and talking to her. She wasn't really sure why, but this felt strangely uncomfortable for her, especially the way the guys were talking and flirting her.
She excused herself to go find Linda. She turned a corner and bummed into a man who spilled his drink down the front of his shirt.
"Oh, god I am so sorry Tom." Jill was saying as she grabbed some napkins.
"It's ok uh " Tom said not knowing the beautiful woman.
"Ja Jill." Jill said shaking her head to clear her thoughts.
"Have we met before?" Tom asked.
"I I don't think so." Jill said realizing that she didn't know him, but wondered how she had known his name. When she had first seen him there had been something very familiar about him, like she knew him, but like a dream fading away, she couldn't remember now.
"Well, I had better go get cleaned up." Tom said walking towards the bathroom.
"I'm sorry, let me help you with that." Jill said following him.
After Tom had cleaned himself up, the two talked for the next hour. Jill steered the conversation so that Tom did most of the talking, since she couldn't remember much about her life.
