had fainted

Jill rushed into the other room, only to see that Linda had fainted, with her cell phone lying on the floor next to her. Jill raced over to Linda to Linda to make sure she was ok. She tried to revive her, but she was out cold. Jill quickly checked under the sink for the first aid kit and took out the smelling salts.
"How did I know where the smelling salts would be?" She thought absentmindedly, but quickly returned her attention to Linda, who was regaining consciousness.
"Linda, what happened?" Jill asked.
Linda immediately began to cry.
"Oh god Jill." Linda said through sobs as she clutched Jill. "James is dead!"
"What?!" Jill gasped. "How? What happened?"
"He was trying to escape were they were holding him." She cried. "He tried to climb up a tree to jump over the wall and fell."
"Oh Linda, I am so sorry." Jill said as she felt her eyes welling up with tears and she too began to sob. She couldn't understand why she felt such a sense of loss over hearing that James was dead, but she did.
The two women went back over to Jill's apartment where they cried and comforted one another for the rest of the day. Finally Linda said that she had to be going, but wanted to talked to her again, and would really like it if she could go to the funeral, which they would be having in the next day or two.
"Of course I will go." Jill said leading Linda to her car. "Call me with all of the information when you know and I will be there." Jill watched as Linda drove away. She went back up to her apartment and began to cry again, still not understanding why.
