Jon entered his home to the sound of "Annie Get Your Gun". Mom must have put the soundtrack into the stereo.
"Jon, is that you?" Linda Gibson poked her head out of her downstairs office door as Howard Keel's voice belted out from the living room.
"Yesterday they told you you would not go far"
"Yeah. I'm pretty tired. I think I'm just going to head up to my room."
"That night you opened and there you are"
"Is something bothering you, sweetie?"
"Next day on your dressing room they've hung a star"
"Just school stuff."
"Let's go on with the show."
"Well, you let me know if you need anything."
Jon trudged up the stairs a stark contrast to the happy music blaring behind him. As if to punctuate his hopelessness, the last line that Jon heard before closing his door behind him was "There's no people like show people, they smile when they are low."
Jon was pretty low just then, and he didn't feel like smiling at all.
