Karyn barreled through the air toward Jon, intent on taking him right then and there.
Desperation struck, as Jon frantically swung, connecting with Karyn's left right shoulder. The she-wolf's momentum was cut short by the swing, and she toppled into the bed, cutting into the mattress with her claws. She rolled with the fall, and rested on her haunches, ready to spring again.
Jon backed away, holding the bat up again to swing if need be. He was still a few paces away from the stone; if he went for it, Karyn would easily cut him off. Zoë was much closer.
"Zoë! Grab the stone!"
"Okay!" She lunged for it, triggering Karyn's leap toward her. Jon swung again, tagging the she-wolf in the back of the head. She collided in mid-air with Zoë, just as she was within reach of the stone. Karyn tumbled into the stereo system, crushing a tower speaker into useless junk. The human girl was bowled over, but managed to shove the stone in Jon's direction. It skittered along the wood floor, closer to Jon's reach.
He lunged for it, snatching it effortlessly. "Got it!"
Zoë smiled, struggling to her feet. She had made it to one knee when Karyn lunged from behind and sank her fangs deep into Zoë's shoulder. She screamed in pain and collapsed, clutching the wound as Karyn let go.
