Hailee watched as a wave of confusion briefly flashed across Karyn’s face. “I had come up to check Hailee,” she said. “I’d heard her in the bathroom but I didn’t want to go into your room since the door was shut.”
“Aw, Karyn, that’s sweet, but you’re always welcome in my room,” the girl said.
Hailee turned back to face this new arrival. It took her a second to recognize this girl as Zoe, Jon’s little sister. All of Jon’s memories of Zoe was of her as a goth. It was a shock to see the girl her mind told her should be decked out in all black with a corset, torn fishnets, and sky high stacked heel boots dressed as preppily as she was now.
“Well, now that you’re home I’m going to leave,” Karyn said. “Mikey’s in his room doing his room doing his homework. He’s had his snack so he should be good to go until your mom gets home tonight.”
“Thanks, Karyn,” Zoe said as Karyn left the room. “Sorry to keep you waiting, Hail, cheerleading practice ran long. Sarah can be such a dictator sometimes.”
“Yeah, totally,” Hailee said.
“So, you ready to get this project started?”
Hailee felt completely lost so she just nodded. She felt so comfortable being herself that she sometimes forgot she didn’t really know anything about this new reality. She followed Zoe out of the office that used to be Jon’s bedroom. As she walked she reached into her pocket, gripped the stone, and murmured a quick wish to be able to be able to remember her current life. The sudden surge of information caused her to stop in her tracks.
“OMG,” she whispered.
