Hailee Wants To Stick Around For A While

“Like, of course, because I’m not Jon. I’m Hailee,” Hailee said. She decided not to tell Karyn about Jon’s wish. She wanted to see how what her life was like now. Besides, the idea of being changed back into a boy practically made her retch every time she thought about it.
Hailee watched Karyn for a few moments. The girl finally seemed to be relaxing some and taking in her surroundings. Of course the room was different because Karyn’s wish effectively made it so Jon didn’t exist in this reality, but she wondered if that realization had hit Karyn yet. Hailee waited for a moment longer, until she saw Karyn’s grip on the stone relax, then she darted and grabbed it from her hand. Before Karyn could react, she’d dashed into the bathroom that connected Jon’s bedroom and his sister Zoe’s room, shutting and locking the door behind her.
Hailee stood panting, staring at her reflection in the bathroom mirror. Karyn started pounding on the door almost immediately. What am I doing, Hailee thought to herself. Karyn is Jon’s friend. She wouldn’t do anything to hurt him. But I’m not Jon, she thought. I mean, I am him in a way, but I’m still me and if she turns me back into Jon then I won’t be me in anymore. Hailee felt like her head was splitting. All she knew was her body felt like it was supposed to feel, that she felt like she was supposed to feel, and she didn’t want to go back to something that every fiber of her being told her was unnatural, even if it had been normal before Karyn had made her wish. At the same time she didn’t want to completely give up on being Jon either. There had to be a way.
Suddenly, Hailee had an idea. “I wish that, with as little change to her other memories as possible, Karyn would forget that Jon and I are the same person until I tell her that I’m Jon.” The pounding stopped immediately but Hailee wasn’t done yet. “I wish there were valid reasons for Karyn and I to be here,” she said.
