Hailee turned back to face the other girl. She looked at her and had the weirdest feeling cross her. How could she know Karyn? She was just a freshman and this wasn’t even her house. Jon knew Karyn. She knew that she was Jon and that was why but she couldn’t shake the feeling that it was wrong.
“My name is Hailee,” she said. “You should know, you made the wish.”
Karyn went even more slack jawed than she’d been before, if that was possible. There was no denying the sass she was getting from this person that had been Jon mere moments before was all teenage girl. She just couldn’t figure out how. Jon heard the wish so his memory of the old reality shouldn’t have been affected by the wish. Maybe giving him a new name was messing with his head? He shouldn’t be able to act this female this effortlessly.
“Jon?” Karyn asked.
Hailee shook her head. “No, I’m Hailee. I used to be Jon until you opened your big mouth. Now, can I have Jon’s stone back?”
“Why do you keep referring to Jon as a separate person?”
Hailee started to answer say something and suddenly realized she didn’t really know the answer. “I’m not sure. I mean, I remember being Jon, it’s not like I’m really a separate person from him, my memories from before your wish and after the wish don’t feel like separate memories or lives. It’s more like one moment I thought of myself as Jon and the next it felt unnatural to think of myself that way, that my name was Hailee…Hailee Blanchard. By the way, why did you change my last name?”
Karyn sighed. “I was frustrated. I felt like I’d had eyes staring at me all day. Then, once I was fixed you seemed grossed out by the breast forms and it just kind of set me off. I wanted you to experience the feeling that you weren’t yourself anymore so I wanted to make you something as different from your normal life as possible, I guess. Not that it worked, you seem like a perfectly normal girl.”
