Joan, of course, got up to get the stone as soon as the door closed (Mrs Miller had left it in a drawer in her desk). Of course, she'd reckoned without the effects of the pregnancy. Since it took her a lot longer to get there, she just grabbed it and headed back to her desk. But she was only halfway back when she heard Mrs Miller's footsteps outside the door...
