"What?" Nick called back "Who's there?" For a second, he thought that it was Megan, but it didn't quite sound like her. But then again... he remembered, just as he saw Megan's mother come around the corner.
"Meggie!" she exclaimed, then, seeing her daughter, took a step back "What are you wearing? were you outside llike that?!" Just then, before Nick could think of anything, he saw Megan's father come into view.
"Meg? What the?" he quickly averted his eyes "Will you put some clothes on?! Where did you just come from?"
"Ummm... " Nick was at a loss - he had only met them twice - three times if you count one time when her parents had spotted them on the street, sharing a kiss, and very awkwardly breaking the mood. Still, he thought that taking the offense would buy him some time. "What are you doing here? I didn't know you were coming..."
Her mother answered "Yes well we were driving through on our way back from seeing your sister and the baby, and we were ahead of schedule, so we decided to drop in and see you!" Seeing Nick's stunned look, she quickly added "Oh but don't worry, honey, we're only staying overnight!"
Nick well knew that her parents sometimes stayed over here, which he had always resented a bit since it meant that he and Megan wouldn't be having sex for the duration of their stay. Now he was dreading it for other reasons.
Megan's father chimed in "That's right, we won't keep you away from your boyfriend for long. In fact, why don't you call him and we'll all go out for dinner tonight!" He was still studiously looking away. "but for now, why don't you put on something decent and let's go get some lunch!"
Nick was now thinking a bit more clearly. "Umm, actually, uh, Dad, I have to go in to work... I'm kind of late as it is." Hopefully he could just grab what he needed and get out.
Now her father was grinning "No, you don't! I know that your boss sent you home with a story about your pipes leaking! I arranged it with him to give you the day off!" he seemed amused with himself. Megan's father was always pulling dumb practical jokes on her. Now, the joke was on Nick. "I'm a little surprised you got here so quick, but I guess it has been about 20 minutes... Anyway, get yourself dressed and let's go!"
"Right!" Nick said, heading for Megan's bedroom. Nick was worried now... it usually took Megan about 20-25 minutes to get back from work - she could walk in anytime! Suddenly, going out for lunch with her parents didn't seem like such a bad idea. But could Nick hold his focus for that long, while trying to pretend to be Megan for the two people who knew her best? It didn't seem likely, but staying here could get very complicated very quickly. He paused to grab a few samples of Megan's clothes, briefly wishing he could use the medallion right away. Then he realized he had nothing to put the clothes in - he had left the purse by the door! It would look odd walking out with an extra sock and tank top, but he needed to leave with something of hers.
