Andre took his seat at the back of the class, the lesson was already in flow "late again, this will be noted on your permanent record Mr Coleman" Wilks said, not even turning from whatever he was writing on the board.
I looked around from my vantage point at the back of the class, Jonnie was sat at the front of the class as usual, her buddy Karyn sat behind her, but today Ted had swapped places with one of the other geeky kids, Max I seemed to recall... Who cares what their names are as long as they respect you. Sarah was sat behind him... What a joke.
"who can solve for X?, Miss Merlin I'm sure you will do me the honor" Mr Wilks said as I stared out of the window and fingered the strange rock I had round earlier. I removed it from my pocket, it looked like a boring stone, yet I felt it was important somehow, as I passed it from hand to hand feeling it's strange smoothness.
I looked up, Jonnie was up at the bored, she was the same embarrassed red as she always got when in front of the class, even though she always knew all the answers... She was such a teachers pet. Boy I wish she wasn't ... I don't know why but I felt the need to make a wish... "I wish Jonnie Merlin would no longer have any understanding of even the simplest of maths" I whispered, hoping nobody would hear. I felt the need to look away from her as I spoke, looking down at the stone I held under the table, I felt sure it had glowed.
Giggling brought my attention away from the strange stone. Looking back I saw what people in the class were laughing at, Jonnie had started drawing meaningless squiggles all over the board.
"I don't think that is very funny Miss Merlin, who put you up to it?" Wilks didn't look happy, Jonnie started trembling and looked like she was having trouble finding words... "I can't... I" she said before running from the room. I sat back in my chair and carefully secured the stone back in my pocket... Maybe today could be salvaged after all, I thought as a wide smile appeared on my face.
